Some stories are not shouted. They are carried quietly, for years, until the person carrying them sets them down and finds they were never weak at all.

Welcome

Welcome to my writing desk

I write about the interior lives of women who are told, in a hundred small ways, to be quieter. About the years that pass in waiting rooms and borrowed houses. About the exact moment a person stops apologising for the space they take up.

My debut novel, When Silence Becomes Strength, began as a single scene I could not stop rewriting: a girl walking away from a city at first light, carrying everything she owned in one suitcase.

This site is arranged like a book, because that felt like the only honest shape for it. Scroll slowly and the pages will turn.

About

About the author

Rehab R. Adil is a novelist whose work sits in the long, unglamorous middle of ordinary lives — the waiting, the compromising, the slow accumulation of small refusals that eventually add up to a self.

She came to fiction late and sideways, writing in the margins of other obligations: on the backs of receipts, in the half hour before a household wakes. That habit shaped the work. Her sentences are short; her chapters are the length of a stolen moment.

When Silence Becomes Strength, her first novel, took six years to finish and three drafts to find its ending. It follows a young woman across a decade of leaving — a city, a marriage, a version of herself she had been handed rather than chosen.

She is currently at work on a second novel, set across two generations of the same house.

The Book

When Silence Becomes Strength

A Novel · 2024

Amina has spent eleven years being agreeable. A good marriage, by the measure everyone around her uses. A room of her own, technically. And the knowledge that the fastest way through a difficult evening is to say nothing at all.

Then her mother dies, and a letter arrives naming Amina the owner of a house she has never seen — in a city she left at nineteen and swore she would not return to.

A novel about the long apprenticeship of leaving: what it costs, who it disappoints, and how a woman learns the difference between silence that is taken from her and silence she chooses.
